Maré Tèt : A fabric of heritage and affirmation
In Montreal, inside a community centre, fabrics pass from hand to hand, wrap around heads, and turn into crowns. The maré tèt—born from a colonial law in Louisiana that forced Black women to cover their hair—has become a symbol of Caribbean heritage, transmission, and sisterhood, carried by the laughter of the women gathered together.
